Monday, November 8 / 4:00 PM; location: McCune Conference Room, 6020 HSSB.
FACULTY FORUM: Stanley Katz (Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University and President Emeritus of the American Council of Learned Societies):
"What is the New Normal in Higher Education?"
The financial crisis of the past two years looks like it is becoming structural, especially in the public universities. Is privatization the answer, at least for the "elite" state sector in higher education?

UC Pension Crisis:
In the fall, the FA will tackle issues pertaining to the future of UC retirement benefits (now "post-employment benefits", or PEB), and the rate and timing of employees's renewed contributions to UCRP. Official documents include:
--The 43-page Executive Summary of the Final Report of the the Commission Work Groups of The President’s Task Force on Post‐Employment Benefits, dated 8/30/2010.
--The 12-page Dissenting Opinion authored by the staff and Academic Senate members of the Commission Work Groups of The President’s Task Force on Post‐Employment Benefits. Because it has not yet been formally vetted, it does not represent the official opinion of the Academic Senate.
--The 8-page Response to “A Dissenting Statement by Staff and Academic Senate Members of the Work Groups of The President’s Task Force on Post‐Employment Benefits”, dated 9/23/2010.
--The 5-page Response to this last document by Robert Anderson, the Vice Chair of the UC Academic Senate, dated 9/26/2010.
For the UC Faculty Welfare positions on PEB recommendations, check statement dated August 27, 2010; 2); and UCFW's official position on PEB options, forwarded on October 1, 2010 to the Chairs of the Academic Senate by the Chair of the Academic Council.
Also check the analysis by Henning Bohn (Economics, UCSB) on the options of the PEB's taskforce.
