Defending Scientific Research and Academic Freedom
In the last few months, faculty have taken extraordinary actions to defend higher education. The UCSB Faculty Association, along with our state-wide federation, CUCFA, and our national ally, AAUP, have won several significant victories to protect research funding and academic freedom.
CUCFA sued for the release of the Trump demand letter - and won!
CUCFA and AAUP built a coalition representing all UC workers that sued the Trump administration to prevent the University from capitulating under financial coercion - and won!
We supported AAUP’s successful lawsuit that affirmed non-citizens' free speech rights - and won!
We joined a class action suit to restore over $500M in grants to UCLA - and won!
Faculty members spoke out against UCOP’s plan to eliminate the hiring incentive for the President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (PPFP). On November 18, UC President James Milliken pledged that UCOP will continue to support the hiring incentive.
